Time transcripts of googleMapHowTo [00:00:00:010] When you first get to Google Maps it will probably present you with a map of [00:00:04:030] the place where you are if it knows where you are. And if you click this [00:00:08:040] little hamburger over here then you get a menu and one of the things [00:00:12:040] you can click on is 'My Maps.' If you've never made a map before, then [00:00:16:050] you'll just get a welcome screen. If you've got some you've already made, then you will [00:00:20:070] be shown a menu of those. But anyway you can create a new map [00:00:24:080] and the easiest thing I think to do [00:00:28:090] is to just type in the latitude and longitude of the placemarker that you want to set [00:00:32:100] so why don't we put in the location of the Japanese earthquake [00:00:36:100] [00:00:40:110] There. It drops a placemarker in the ocean. That's fine. [00:00:44:130] [00:00:48:140] Click this little '+' here and then you want to edit [00:00:52:150] this. Let's call this [00:00:56:170] earthquake! [00:01:00:180] We can also edit what kind of an icon it looks like. [00:01:04:180] [00:01:08:190] Here. [00:01:12:200] I don't know. [00:01:16:210] This crisis menu is a lot of fun. You can have everything from an [00:01:20:220] infestation of geckos to a ninja with a throwing star or something like that. [00:01:24:220] Ooh here's one that looks like a tsunami, maybe that's the one for us. Whatever. fine. [00:01:28:230] Now you are all set. [00:01:32:250] Let's add another. So here we go with that [00:01:36:260] close-by station that we were using for all of our other examples. [00:01:40:270] [00:01:44:280] It drops a placemarker there. [00:01:48:290] And why don't we edit that and call it [00:01:53:000] station 21418 [00:01:57:000] Great. We'll add another one just for [00:02:01:020] fun but my guess is that you've figured it out now. [00:02:05:020] Here is [00:02:09:030] a station that is far away. [00:02:13:050] [00:02:17:060] [00:02:21:070] That's going to drop another placemarker there. [00:02:25:080] We are going to edit this one. It is station [00:02:29:090] 32412. [00:02:33:100] Save it. Okay. Now at the end once you have [00:02:37:100] everything there, you might want to just zoom out and verify [00:02:41:130] that these things are where you think they are supposed to be. [00:02:45:140] We've got an earthquake off the coast of Japan, a couple of stations. One is close by, one is not close by. [00:02:49:150] At the end you want to give your map a title. [00:02:53:160] And then click this share button. If you forgot to give [00:02:57:170] your map a title, it's going to remind you that it wants you to do that. [00:03:01:190] And you can also get a link. If you want me to be able to see your link without having [00:03:05:210] to login to Google you can change this so that it's public with anyone who has the link. [00:03:09:220] And you can share with Grandma, too! All right, that's all.
