This lesson covered the war in the Atlantic and Europe, the role of oil in the war, and how oil impacted American society during and after the war. We also discussed how oil dominated the objectives and strategies of America in the Middle East after WWII. In particular, we learned about how the Red Line Agreement was abandoned, paving the way for America, not Britain that had been in the Middle East longer, to emerge as the dominant power in Middle East oil and politics. We also found out in this lesson, when and how America moved from being a net exporter to a net importer of oil. Finally, we discussed the major post-war petroleum deals and contracts as well as the post-war energy crisis in Europe and how America, through the Marshall Plan, helped Europe to overcome the crisis and economic decline.
