Summary on Markets

The final chapter reviews the main concepts of the book and summarizes what we know (sociologically) about markets and the questions we need to ask ourselves when approaching a study of markets. You should become very familiar with the seven questions we want to ask when studying markets. (pages 172-173) Further, you should be able to answer these questions when considering the various aspects of a market. We will have practice with this in the homework for this week.

Keep in mind

When we begin to analyze, more broadly, energy markets and their potential for renewables, we need to take into account cost per unit (of energy) as well as the politics, ideology, culture, habits, etc., of the context under consideration. The market and question of renewables development in China is going to be a significant degree of difference from the development of renewables in other countries, for reasons ranging from ideology to geography. The real skill in nonmarket strategies is to be able to anticipate and read what the significant differences (dependent variables) are between various renewables markets.
