This chapter concludes our course by emphasizing the complexity, or "messiness", of geopolitics. We will highlight the multiplicity of agents' identities and goals within the combination of geopolitical structures which will underscore the ways in which geopolitics is a very messy affair.

Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • explain the complexity or “messiness” of geopolitics;
  • describe the interaction of multiple geopolitical structures in creating specific geopolitical contexts;
  • examine a geopolitical commitment to peace; and
  • explain how complexity or “messiness” is a product of the interaction of structure and agency.
