Public perceptions of climate change, and consequently public support for actions to combat climate change, are quite varied and politically polarizing. This week's readings explore the idea of understanding underlying attitudes to developing appropriate responses to climate change, particularly at the local level.

Reading Assignment (Penn State login required)*

When reading, pay careful attention to:

  • Americans' beliefs about their ability to influence policy decisions at different scales of governance
  • recent trends in public concern about climate change
  • strategies to bridge the gaps between audiences with different ideological views on climate change
  • the role of the expert vs the citizen in environmental policymaking
