The human causes of climate change fall into two categories: proximate causes and driving forces. This lesson will explore these categories and present an overview of mitigation — actions that prevent, limit, delay, or slow the rate of climate change. We will start the lesson with a review of a few basic scientific facts to put these crucial elements of human-climate interaction into context.

What will we learn?

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

  • explain how the greenhouse effect causes climate change, and why scientists prefer the term "climate change" over "global warming";
  • identify the main anthropogenic greenhouse gases;
  • explain what proximal causes are and name the six categories of proximal causes identified by the US government;
  • describe examples for each of these six categories of proximal causes;
  • explain what the driving forces of anthropogenic climate are and name the five main categories of driving forces;
  • describe examples for each of these five categories of driving forces and some possible interactions among categories;
  • explain what mitigation is and discuss the three types of mitigative action, giving examples;
  • implement the fundamentals of paragraph structure.
