Library Badges

PrintPrint

The library staff have created a digital badging system to promote library skills and proficiencies for Penn State students. Basically, each “badge” you earn is a credential - a “representation of a specific skill, ability, accomplishment or competency.” (Gibson, Ostashewski, Flintoff, Grant, & Knight, 2013, p. 404). Each module requires that you submit evidence of learning. If you’ve completed the learning module and the evidence submitted meets the librarian’s satisfaction, you’ll earn a badge. If you've completed any of these badges for a previous course, please notify the instructor - you're not expected to do it twice!

The badges you will earn in this course cover the following topics:

  1. Academic Integrity - Build upon your understanding of academic integrity and what it means at Penn State. This badge uses the academicintegrity.psu.edu and adds your reflections on what you have learned about academic integrity.
  2. Citations - Learn about plagiarism and copyright and why citation is important! You will be doing a lot of academic writing in this course this semester. As such, it is important you're familiar with how (and why) we work with citations. While we'll also devote two writing symposia (Lessons 5 and 6) to related topics, please complete these badges now so that you're ready to complete all course assignments appropriately from a citation perspective.
  3. APA Citation style - Understand how to properly format your references for this course.

Log into the Library badging system website and earn the Academic Integrity badge.

You must complete three badges in the Orientation. These are graded as complete/incomplete.  Failure to complete the badges will result in grades being withheld on subsequent graded assignments in the course.

If you need technical assistance while completing the modules, utilize the Help window that is provided in the badging modules.

  1. Log onto the Library badging system website using your PSU credentials (no outside e-mail addresses!) badgesapp.psu.edu.  You must choose "Log in with Penn State ID".
  2. Create your profile as soon as possible to make sure you are added to the group. Be sure to include your name to get credit for the badges you completed.
  3. On your dashboard (which is the main page; also found at the top of the menu bar on the left hand side of your screen), you should see in your "Activity Stream" box that you have been added to a group. The group name is GEOG 438W Library Badges.
  4. Click on GEOG 438W Library Badges to go directly to your class group.
  5. You should see 3 badges to earn within this group. Click on the Academic Integrity badge to begin.
  6. You will submit each step of the badge individually. You will get feedback on each step, but you do not have to wait for feedback to move on to the next step. The completed steps will be approved or returned. If it is returned, you will need to review the feedback, alter your work, and resubmit the badge.

The only submission you will make related to the Academic Integrity badge in this Orientation is answering a Yes/No question on the Orientation Quiz about whether you completed it yet or not.  The librarian will provide the instructor with a summary of students who have successfully completed the badge.
Once you are finished with the Academic Integrity badge, log into the Library badging system website and earn the Citations badge.
  1. You will need to click on the Citations badge.
