Lesson Project Tasks

Lesson 5 Project

Create a map layout that includes three or more data/map representations that tell a story or show information of the burglary situation in Philadelphia using at least two different kinds of representations (e.g. choropleth and dot density). The map representations should fit together to tell different aspects about the data. Do not recreate series used in Lesson 4.

  • Data can include:
    • counts
    • rates
    • variables of change (e.g. rate increase/decrease)
    • or other variables made from the data we downloaded, e.g. total counts or rate averages over a series of years
  • Map representations can include:
    • choropleth
    • graduated symbol
    • proportional symbol
    • dot density map
    • multivariate dot density map
    • or other unexplored map representation including pie charts, bar charts, etc.
      Note: sections of pie charts should add up to a whole, or 100%. So do not just use counts of each burglary year for the sections. The census tracts would not be comparable to each other.
  • Here are three examples that you are welcome to use:

    1) show rates and counts (each in a representation that best suits that kind of variable) for two different years, (which would be 4 data frames).

    2) two dot density maps for two different years, and the percent change (of the count) between those two years.

    3) rates for two different years, and a bivariate dot density map for those two years.

When your map is complete, export the following two versions of your map:

  1. Export your map as a PNG
    • File > Export Map...
    • Navigate to the appropriate lesson folder.
    • Name it "LASTname_FIRSTinitial_L5" (using your name).
    • Save as type: PNG.
    • In the expanded Options menu, on the General tab, set the Resolution to 100 dpi (Recall 72 dpi is suggested for online images, but 100 dpi will make the images a bit larger when viewed at full size. This will be useful for viewing each other's work.)
    • On the Format tab, make sure the Color Mode is set to 24-bit True Color.
    • Click the Save button.
  2. Export your map as a PDF (which I will use for feedback)
    • File > Export Map...
    • Navigate to the appropriate lesson folder.
    • Name it "LASTname_FIRSTinitial_L5" (using your name).
    • Save as type: PDF.
    • In the expanded Options menu, on the General tab, set the Resolution to 300 dpi (Recall 300 is most commonly used for print.  I will be commenting on the images onscreen, but the increased resolution will allow me to zoom in more, and allow you to print your map, if interested.)
    • On the Format tab, place a checkmark in the boxes to "Convert Marker Symbols to Polygons" and to "Embed All Document Fonts."
    • Click the Save button.

Submit both versions of your map via the Create Submission link at right (must be logged in to see link).

  • Select Lesson 5 Map for Assignment Type.
  • Enter name for Author.
  • Enter title of map.
  • Under Map Image File, browse for the PNG file version of your Lesson 5 map. Click Upload.
  • Under Assignment File, browse for the PDF file version of your Lesson 5 map. Click Upload.
  • Click Save.

Note: I will only publish your maps for each other to see after all students have turned in work, and possibly after you receive feedback. If you do not want me to publish your map, please let me know, but also remember that we are all here to learn and improve no matter where we are or what skills we have learned. Sharing work will help you learn about your own work, provide opportunity for further feedback, provide exposure to work of others, and provide opportunity to give feedback to others.
