6.4 Benign Manufacturing

The ultimate objective of applying LCA to product development is for manufacturing to be as environmentally benign as the current technologies allow. According to Hauschild et al. (2005), Environmentally Benign Manufacturing (EBM) must enable economic development while protecting the environment for future generations, i.e., minimize pollution and waste, conserving resources, etc. Environmentally Benign Manufacturing requires for products to be designed for re-use, for better reprocessing technologies to be developed. Environmentally Benign Manufacturing must strive to be "lean" rather than new. There must be an integration of financial and environmental systems, the need for re-use / life prediction modeling, and accounting system for the "value" of EBM in processing/design selection.
