Capstone instructions

Overview

The capstone project for this course is a venue for you to synthesize your programming skills with your Earth science education skills. Create a small lesson that you would teach to an audience of your choice that involves some aspect of programming. Note that you do NOT have to teach programming in your lesson (but you could). Your lesson needs to make use of your programming skills, though, so for example you could develop one of your two small projects into a lesson in which students would have to interact with an animation or plot you made with Processing.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this project you should be able to integrate programming and Earth science education into a teachable lesson.

What does a successful capstone project include?

Your capstone project should be lesson plan that has:

  • A brief overview of what will be taught and why
  • A set of learning objectives (What will your students know or be able to do at the end of your lesson?) For this, I would like you to think about both the content (facts, concepts, etc.) as well as the skills (critical thinking, data analysis, etc.) that you hope students get from your lesson.
  • A description of your plan (What will the students do?) This plan needs to have enough detail so another person could follow it and carry it out exactly as you intend.
  • A list of necessary materials if there are any
  • Lesson content that includes some feature that you made with your programming skills -- an animation, plot of data, something like that.
  • A list of deliverables (What will the students turn in? How will you know if they learned what you wanted them to learn?) I want to see sample answers or a key so I know what kind of responses/ results you expect from your students.
  • An evaluation rubric (so that another teacher could assess the students in the manner that you intended)

When is the capstone project due?

Turn in your project to the capstone dropbox by 11 August 2021.
