In this lesson, you will get an overview of China’s economic development path and transformation over the past four decades.
Lesson Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- describe the main characteristics of a centrally planned economy, the guaranteed social provisions by the state, and the various social, political and economic campaigns under Chairman Mao;
- describe the ways that Deng Xiaoping changed the course of the PRC through ‘opening and reforms’;
- discuss China’s establishment of Special Economic Zones for economic development; and
- discuss China’s economic engagement in Africa.
