About George Chaplin:

George Chaplin is the course lead instructor. He is a Senior Researcher in the Anthropology Department and an Instructor in the Master of GIS program at the World Campus, both appointments being at The Pennsylvania State University. He has worked with GIS for over seventeen years and was awarded his Master of Science in GIS with Distinction in 2001 and was the winner of the Association of Geographic Information (U.K.) Student of the Year Award for his master's thesis in 2002. He is also a certified GIS Professional. In the Anthropology Department he does mostly his own research or assists other faculty with GIS applications in Anthropology and Archaeology. He interests are concerned with Spatial Epidemiology, Spatial and Geo-Statistics, Human Biogeography, Human Ecology, Biodiversity, the causes of spatial patterning and paleo-ecological reconstruction. He also assists in the search for human ancestors and uses GIS as a tool in looking for fossils in Kenya, Nepal and China. He is interested in all aspects of the Spatial Sciences and how they can be used to illuminate the present human condition and its ancestry. He is a Fifth Dan and Shihan (Master Instructor) in the Okikukai system of Uechi Ryu Karate Do, a traditional Okinawan Karate Style. He was born in Kent, England. He is married to Professor Nina Jablonski and does much of his work in Anthropology with her.
