Rules of Engagement
Remember, rules of engagement create not only effective learning environments but also enhance communication in any setting. The twelve rules of engagement are:
- Stay focused on the topic and questions being discussed.
- All ideas are accepted; seek to learn from divergent perspectives.
- Encourage and support different points of view.
- Listen actively; respect others and think carefully about what they are saying - NOT whether or not you agree.
- Conversations are about inquiry and NOT for advocating a position or point of view.
- Focus on issues and interests, NOT positions or personalities.
- Focus on positive/constructive outcomes.
- Only one person speaks at a time; don't interrupt.
- No side conversations.
- Respect time boundaries.
- When in doubt, ask for clarification.
- Recognize that everyone shares responsibility for the success of this effort.
